All Norwegians celebrate this day when we got our own law in 1814. For those of you that don’t know this, I’ll tell you how we celebrate this very special day... :
All the schools in the city gather and make a parade (we call it to walk in “train” / gå i tog) and later in the evening all kind of groups like choirs, sportsclubs and teams, other clubs and dancing schools make an other “train”.
For the rest of the people that are not going in “train”; they stand on the sidewalk and look at the “train”.
Something that’s very important for me at this day is to shout: “Hurra!” to as many people you can, both those you know, and don’t know (and of course in a good way!! :-) and wave your flag at the same time. I like this so so much. :-)
The best dressing to wear in a day like this is our national costume called “Bunad”, but because of many reasons I didn’t wear it this year... Sorry!
I had a really great day (like every 17. May ;-), even though it was SOOOO cold for two “Nor-Ugandans” with 5degrees celcius.
Dress code: Bunad (our national costume)
Most important word: Hurra! (have to be shouted all the day)
A "must" to bring: A Norwegian flag
How to greet people at this day: Happy Birthday!
Conclution:
“Hipp, hipp – Hurra, hurra, hurra!!!”
